Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon Yakubu Dogara wins Senate President and Speaker House of Representatives respectively.

Honourable Yakubu Dogara representing Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa-Balewa federal constituency of Bauchi state has just been elected as the Speaker of the federal house of representatives.
Dogara emerged victorious in a keen contest with Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila representing Surulere 1 federal constituency.
A total number of 358 members of the House of Representatives were present in the House. Hon. Dogara polled 182 votes while Hon. Gbajabiamila came close with 174 votes.
Both Dogara and Gbajabiamila are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) with Gbajabiamila earlier selected as the APC consensus candidate for the position at a mock election.
Dogara however decried the process and stood his ground on contesting the position with Gbajabiamila on the floor of the House.
On the floor of the House today, Hon. Yakubu Dogara was nominated for the position of Speaker by Hon. Abdulmumini Jubril from Kano while the nomination was seconded by Hon. Chike Okafor from Imo state, all members of the APC.
While nominating Dogara, Abdulmimini had urged him to accept the nomination regardless of possible personal consequences, a veiled reference to the fact that his decision to contest for the position was against his party’s wish.
On the other hand, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila was nominated by Hon. Mohammed Abdul Sani from Bauchi and his nomination seconded by another APC honourable member from Edo state.
Gbajabiamila’s loss means the APC could not successfully have in place as national assembly leaders its preferred candidates seeing that senator Ahmed Lawan similarly lost his bid for the senate presidency in the morning despite being endorsed by the APC.
Hon Yakubu Dogara in his first reaction praised God for the victory.

Earlier ,The crisis rocking members of the APC in the National Assembly has taken a new dimension as members of the opposition party PDP are bent on creating a upset by allegedly endorsing the two main aggrieved APC contestants, Senator Bukola Saraki and Honourable Yakubu Dogara for the positions of Senate president and speaker respectively. The duo separately staged walk outs during the APC’s mock election to pick a sole candidate of the party for the positions. The aggrieved members cited irregularities in the conduct of the mock elections, arguing that principal members of the 8th assembly can only emerge in the hallowed chamber of the Assembly.
