Look at this pix. That was the
Senate President's first point of call yesterday; Atiku's house. He was
strongly influential to his emergence. He(Atiku) is one of the most refined
politicians we have in Nigeria, he understands that politics is all about
diplomacy and negotiation and not autocracy and imposition. Obj ignored him and
nearly paid for it politically in 2003, even Jonathan ran to his house
Nicodemously before the Presidential elections in March. He(Atiku) is now
Buhari's closest ally; Buhari knows what he is doing. Tinubu was the only one
who kept underestimating his influence. Tinubu was still basking in the
euphoria of Jonathan's 'defeat' and started floating in seventh heaven when a
foreign news tabloid, the financial times referred to him as "Nigeria's
Machiavelli" claiming in a headline that it was he who toppled President
Jonathan. This must have been his Achilles heel as he decided to pick open
fights with his proteges and allies alike; Fashola, Fayemi and Saraki.
Let's not forget he had an axe to
grind with Atiku after the APC primaries. Atiku was as equally primed as Buhari
to win the primaries, thanks to his mastery of the game and his ability to reach
out to the delegates before the primaries. I vividly remember that Buhari's
supporters were very jittery in the run in to the primaries when they kept berating
Atiku for what they called 'unconventional' maneuvering of delegates. On the
day of the primaries, Tinubu showed once again the local champion that he was
by successfully shortchanging Atiku in the primaries that was held in his Lagos
territory. There is no way Atiku could have come a distant third in that
primaries even behind Kwankwaso with only 900+ votes. Tinubu might have pulled
off some of his local tricks to usurper Turaki.Yesterday was payback time;
Atiku together with the G-5 governors came together and floored Tinubu
politically. His ministerial nominations even if they scale through the table
of Mr President would be a hard sell on the senate floor. he has permanently
been cut to size.
